Guillain Barré SYNDROME INITIATIVE

WINTER 2022

The Guillain Barré Syndrome (GBS) Initiative is our second official topic of interest for this academic term. Taking what we learned from our experience in the Cystinosis Initiative, we expanded our reach and decided to implement new multimedia elements that would strengthen our advocacy efforts for GBS.

WHY GUILLAIN BARRÉ SYNDROME?

Our interest in GBS arose from its growing interest within media outlets throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic. After learning about its possible correlation with COVID-19 vaccines (which had sparked some hesitancy within the GBS community at the time), we became curious about its pathophysiology and long-term implications. Thanks to foundations like the GBS/CIDP Foundation of Canada, we had the opportunity of learning more about GBS from experts, survivors, and long-time advocates in the field. Much like Cystinosis, GBS affects approximately 1 or 2 individuals per 100,000 every year!

The GBS CASE COMPETITION

Similar to the Triple C Event, the GBS Case Competition seeks to encourage the use of multimedia tools to help spread awareness on GBS. For this competition, two case scenarios were made for a specific form of media (infographic or short video explainer).
